What determines the level of LDL cholesterol in the blood?

The liver manufactures and secretes LDL cholesterol into the blood. It also removes LDL cholesterol from the blood by active LDL receptors on the surface of its cells. A decrease number of liver cell LDL receptors is associated with high LDL cholesterol blood levels.

Both heredity and diet have a significant influence on a person's LDL, HDL and total cholesterol levels. For example, familial hypercholesterolemia (hyper= more + cholesterol + emia= in blood) is a common inherited disorder whose victims have a diminished number or nonexistent LDL receptors on the surface of liver cells. People with this disorder also tend to develop atherosclerosis and heart attacks during early adulthood.

Diets that are high in saturated fats and cholesterol raise the levels of LDL cholesterol in the blood. Fats are classified as saturated or unsaturated (according to their chemical structure). Saturated fats are derived primarily from meat and dairy products and can raise blood cholesterol levels. Some vegetable oils made from coconut, palm, and cocoa are also high in saturated fats.

What are LDL and HDL cholesterol?

LDL cholesterol is called "bad" cholesterol, because elevated levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. LDL lipoprotein deposits cholesterol on the artery walls, causing the formation of a hard, thick substance called cholesterol plaque. Over time, cholesterol plaque causes thickening of the artery walls and narrowing of the arteries, a process called atherosclerosis.

HDL cholesterol is called the "good cholesterol" because HDL cholesterol particles prevent atherosclerosis by extracting cholesterol from the artery walls and disposing of them through the liver. Thus, high levels of LDL cholesterol and low levels of HDL cholesterol (high LDL/HDL ratios) are risk factors for atherosclerosis, while low levels of LDL cholesterol and high level of HDL cholesterol (low LDL/HDL ratios) are desirable.

Total cholesterol is the sum of LDL (low density) cholesterol, HDL (high density) cholesterol, VLDL (very low density) cholesterol, and IDL (intermediate density) cholesterol.

Here's Your Information On Generic Zetia

Mistina Thomson1

"Zetia is a drug that is taken alone or with statins. Zetia is basically ezetimibe, which is known to lower the levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Zetia along with statin can markedly reduce the level of total cholesterol in the circulatory system of the body.

Zetia is used either all alone or with some cholesterol lowering agents (for instance, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors). The 'set' of treatment is often combined with cholesterol-lowering dietary plan for assisting the drug to lower down the cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. Reducing cholesterol will help preventing different kinds of strokes and heart attacks. Zetia acts by reducing the amount of cholesterols in the body those are accumulated in the body one or the other way.

Why is Zetia used?

Zetia is a drug, which is licensed to control the elevated levels of cholesterol in adolescents (10 yr of age and older) and adults. Zetia is made by Merck and Schering-Plough and is currently prescribed all across the world for controlling lipid and cholesterol levels.

Zetia is available as a pill that is to be taken orally. The drug contains 10 mg of Ezetimibe and also some of the inactive ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose NF, lactose monohydrate NF, magnesium stearate NF, sodium lauryl sulfate NF, povidone USP, and croscarmellose sodium NF.

The drug is generally used in combination with statins for improving the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), triglycerides, HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), and Apolipoprotein B.

Combining Zetia with a statin is more effectual as compared to either drug alone. The drug can also be used alone or in combination with Fibrates (for instance, Fenofibrate) in order that improves levels of cholesterols and specially LDL cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), Apolipoprotein B as said before.

Information on Generic Zetia

Generic Zetia (Ezetimibe) is an anti-lipemic drug that is prescribed to treat hypercholesterolemia (a condition in which, the cholesterol levels elevate in the bloodstream putting a patient at higher risks getting various heart/cardiac ailments). Generic Zetia is generally prescribed as an adjunctive therapy with dietary changes for the reduction of elevated cholesterol levels in patients having primary (heterozygous familial and non-familial) hypercholesterolemia. It is only for the patients whose cholesterol levels are not controlled by dietary restriction.

Generic Zetia acts by preventing the production of cholesterols by the liver. The drug has a different mechanism of actions as it downs the blood cholesterol by restricting the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines. However, the drug does not affect too much the absorption of triglycerides or fat-soluble vitamins. The FDA approved the drug in the month of October 2002.

The generic form of Zetia is available in the local market and in most parts of the world. The original Zetia tablet is manufactured by a host of pharmaceutical companies, and the generic Zetia is available in the same size, shape and potency. Capsules of generic Zetia are available in the potencies of 10 mg. However, there are a lot of other manufacturers of generic Zetia in the world market. Generic Zetia contains the active ingredient ezetimibe.

The manufacturers of Generic Zetia can be found on the Internet. These people manufacture the same drug, containing ezetimibe, and they use the same potency, shape and size for the drug. For all practical and qualitative reasons, the generic Zetia is quite the same as the branded version, but it just does not bear the brand name. But, it is priced significantly lower, and all generic Zetia providers have their own price for the tablet.

Benefits of buying Generic Zetia

Generic Zetia tablets are mostly sold over the Internet. The following are some of the benefits that you can get from buying generic Zetia over the Internet:-

* The generic Zetia tablets are quite easily available for purchase.

Risks involved in buying Generic Zetia

There are some risks too. You must be wary of these when you are trying to buy generic Zetia from the Internet: -

* First and foremost, make sure that the website selling the drug is a reputed website. All such websites have some testimonials from their past customers. Look into these to get an idea.
* Also make sure that the website has a safe payment system. If not, you risk exposing your identity to Internet crooks.
* If you are planning to go on a self-medication, you need to study in detail about the effects and side effects of the drug Zetia.
* You have to check into the ingredients too. Make sure that the active component is Ezetimibe in order to avoid spurious products that are commonly sold over the Internet.

How To Lower Cholesterol Through A Diet To Lower Cholesterol Posted By : Delynda Lardone

Delynda Lardone

The newest craze these days that is going around is everyone being concerned with high cholesterol. There is nothing to really be concerned about unless you already have a high cholesterol level, are overweight, or have a family member who has a high cholesterol level. If you have any of these signs, then you should consider going on a diet to lower cholesterol so you can start a reducing cholesterol plan.

One way to lower your cholesterol is by taking medications once your cholesterol levels get too high, but this can all be avoided by making some small changes now. Some things you can do is stop smoking, reduce your alcohol intake, and start getting some exercise. You should consider putting these items into action if you have any family members who have high cholesterol as that puts you at greater risk for getting it later in life.

Maintaining a low cholesterol level is very important to your health because it can help prevent any future heart problems. By adding the three changes mentioned above to your daily schedule along with the three items mentioned below, you can be well on your way to maintaining low cholesterol levels.

One way is to start your day off with a healthy breakfast in the morning. You should try to aim for eating a breakfast filled with at least ten grams of fiber because fiber helps reduce your cholesterol levels. The best meal one can eat in the morning is oatmeal.

If you don't really like oatmeal or need a variety in your morning meals, you can also find some cold cereal that has the fiber you need. You can also add some produce to your meals to spice up the taste like bananas and apples. Kellogg's Special K Red Berries cereal is one of my favorite breakfast meals.

Another way is to switch out your normal oils you use for cooking and start using olive oil. Olive oil is a much healthier option and is widely known as the best vegetable oil on the market. All you need in your daily diet to lower cholesterol is two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil which will help reduce the bad cholesterol while leaving your good cholesterol levels normal.

Another way to lower the bad cholesterol while not destroying the good cholesterol is to start eating some walnuts. It has been said, that if you start eating walnuts daily that you can significantly lower your cholesterol levels in just four weeks. Walnuts also have the added bonus of improving your health by helping to keep your blood vessels in good physical shape.

Reducing cholesterol levels is something everyone should strive for, especially if they have a high cholesterol level or have family member that do. If you make a few simple changes in your diet to lower cholesterol, you will be able to lower your cholesterol significantly enough to keep your body healthy. All is takes is making sure you eat a fiber filled breakfast, exchanging your regular oil for olive oil, and munching on some walnuts daily.
